#imagine giving up a duty you would do willingly and well because you fear you'll forsake it under torture #imagine realizing that duty was given to someone who WILLINGLY gave up on that duty #imagine realizing one of your best friends betrayed another and his wife (also a good friend) and their son (your godson) #imagine wanting to do right by them and wanting to take care of their child like you PROMISED YOU WOULD and being denied that right #(...I JUST REALIZED THAT IF HE HAD GOTTEN TO TAKE CARE OF HARRY HE PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE GONE AFTER PETER EFF YOU DUMBLEDORE) #imagine wanting revenge and seeking it and having no one else believe the truth of your words #imagine getting put in pRISON for the death of those two friends you feel you unwittingly betrayed #imagine that prison is full of guards who prey upon your deepest fears and darkest sadnesses #(and remember-- you just lost two very dear friends and was betrayed by another) #imagine twelve years of reliving that over and over #seeing that house and realizing what had happened #the gut-wrenching horror only betrayal can bring #imaGINE THAT LIFE #so much hurt and sorrow and anger #no wonder he was a little crazy when he escaped #no wonder he didn't handle things well at ALL #i wonder how absolutely terrible it would have been to properly recover from that had he survived

#sirius black #my son who would have died for his best friends and his best friends’ son #(my son who did die fighting for his best friend’s son) #my son who was a gryffindor because he would fight for what’s right even though he grew up learning what was very toxic and wrong #my son who would have probably fought for his brother in the same way (who probably did) but didn’t have words enough in time #my son with his reckless streak who would have died in the first war at the drop of a hat #my son who should have been a hufflepuff because everything good he learned he learned from his friends and he would have died for them #my son who probably would have died lily and james’ secret keeper if he had only known the danger peter was #rather than betraying his best friends #my son who learned so much good and DID so much good #but at the end of the day was still that confused boy on the train #meeting james potter for the first time and having his bigoted world flipped upside down #who spent his entire life trying to make up for that boy #who would throw himself into every danger he felt was with just cause #because better to die a martyr trying to do good #than to live a soldier trying to do penance
